In order to exhibit any form of type standard bird, not only is it necessary to have a written exhibition standard, but standards must also be drawn up with respect to exhibition cages. This is necessary so that all birds are exhibited in similar conditions and also ensures that the birds are benched in a cage which complements the breed being exhibited.
An important feature of the standard Gloster Canary show cage is that the positioning of the perches acts as a means of measuring the overall length of any bird placed in the cage. Ideally, when a Gloster Canary is standing on one perch facing the end of the cage nearest to that perch, its tail should not extend beyond the opposite perch. All black, exterior drinkers are always used on Gloster show cages and the cage label should be positioned on the left-hand side of the front rail, i.e. the opposite end to the door. The floor covering to be used for show cages is seed.
